Mathematics 52x5

We can’t stand her most of the time, we run away from her every time she approaches and the very idea of coinciding with her terrifies us. Mathematics is like that person you never feel like seeing. You love her, but out of your life. 3m3p1d

Sound familiar? Some children begin to experience an aversion to mathematics at a very early age, often as a result of inheritance from their environment. However, mathematics is not only very important to foster students’ intellect, help develop critical thinking and solve problems in the most effective way, but it can also be a lot of fun.

Teachers can help break down the stereotypes that can keep us away from mathematics by including it in their students’ daily lives. Here are some activities you can do with them:

  1. On an excursion. Enjoying the scenery while you count all the things you see along the way is a great way to encourage children’s participation and show them the involvement of math in any activity.
  2. Doing the math. Propose a game in which students do the shopping in a supermarket. The objective is to give them a certain budget so that they can do the math on their own and calculate the amount of products they can afford to buy. On our Smile and Learn platform we have numerous interactive activities and games, which you can use in class.
  3. Doing simple problems. Choose a day of the week to make problems together and reward a job well done. The objective is to encourage students to continue learning.

It’s about showing them that math is everywhere and that they can use it whenever they want.
